Altavista On Track has embarked on a street sculpture program to provide additional beauty and interest to the downtown business district. Art that honors Altavista’s long industrial heritage- railroading, textiles, construction, and furniture making will be featured. The organization will be working with local artists and the community to design and fund these projects. To launch the art program, Altavista On Track purchased a bronze bench sculpture to present to the community as a token of appreciation for the community as a whole. The design is a garden bench with a woman holding a child on her lap and they are reading a book. The bench will be placed in front of the library in Founder’s Square, at Seventh and Broad. The bench sculpture will be unveiled and presented to the town on Wednesday, July 31. AOT Board President, Herb Miller, will present the bench to Mayor Mike Mattox. This event is being sponsored in coordination with the Staunton River Library and Friends of the Library. A class for children on rock digging will be conducted at the Library, beginning at 11:00 AM. The unveiling will follow at 12:15 PM, followed by refreshments and a “Story Time Balloon Show” by Travis the Balloon Dude. The public and media are welcome and encouraged to attend.
