The purpose of the Virginian Railway Heritage Trail is to recognize surviving structures and facilities of the Virginian Railway and to help preserve the history of the railroad, its people and the communities it served, including Altavista.  The railroad played an important part in the early growth of Altavista. Today, the old Virginian tracks are part of the Norfolk Southern Railroad and is the east-west railroad though Altavista.

A new book. The Virginian Railway Heritage Trail,  by Lynchburg author Aubrey Wiley, is being released in May. The hardback book is ninety pages and uses over 175 pictures to compliment the written history of each location on the Virginian Railway Heritage Trail. Five locations in Altavista are highlighted that were vital to the old Virginian Railroad and the Norfolk Southern today.
