Boating Safety Course, Vessel Safety Checks

The Altavista Area Chamber and the Leesville Lake Association will host a Boating Safety Course on both April 27 and May 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Train Station in Altavista. The Virginia Boater Education Card will be awarded to those who successfully complete the course.

Motor boat operators 30 years old or younger and PWC operators of any age must have proof that they have completed a boating safety course.

The course is taught by U.S. Coast Guard Flotilla 85 as a courtesy to the community. There is no charge for the course and all materials will be provided.

Registration is required. Each course is limited to 40 people on a first-come, first-served basis.

To register, go online to www.dgif.virginia.gov and click first on “Boating,” then on “Find a Boating Safety Class,” then on “See the Class Schedule,” then at the bottom of the pages click on “Next” until you come to April 27 or May 4 and the words, “Altavista Train Station.” Read the details of the course and how to find the Train Station. Finally, click on “Register Now.”

Bring a sack lunch and a drink. There will be no break for lunch.

Courtesy Vessel Safety Checks will also be available to those who trailer their boat to either class. Park in the lot near the picnic shelter, not in front of the Train Station.

These courses are co-sponsored by the Leesville Lake Association, a member of the Altavista Chamber of Commerce, and the Chamber. The Leesville Lake Association is a member-supported non-profit organization that helps to improve safe boating on Leesville Lake, its water quality and its natural beauty. The Altavista Chamber is also a member-supported non-profit. It is the town’s premier business advocate.
