Lecture on Restoring the Slave Cemetery at Avoca Plantation and Researching African American Ancestry

 

Avoca Museum Director, Frank Murray will deliver a talk on February 23rd from 10 until 11 am on the Slave Cemetery at the Avoca Plantation.   Mr. Murray will discuss the ten year process of finding and restoring the slave cemetery at Avoca.  The talk will also cover the ongoing genealogical efforts to identify those who served at Avoca both slave and free and their descendants.  This part of the lecture will discuss basic genealogies as well as the difficulties and idiosyncrasies of researching slave genealogy.  The talk will be followed by a question and answer period and brief reception.  After the conclusion, all are invited to tour the slave cemetery.
